Driving in style
The Saopha of Mongpawn driving down the Strand Road after a reception for the visiting Prince of Wales (future King George V), January 1906. The Saopha of Mongpawn, Sao Hkun Ti, had been a key figure in the Limbin Confederacy of the 1880s (fighting the government of King Thibaw), and was the father of Sao Sam Htun (who was Counsellor for Frontier Areas and mortally wounded during the assassination of General Aung San in 1947). His annual 'tribute' to the British Burma government was 4,500 rupees (kyats) a year.
