This advertisement was for a famous souvenir shop at 6 Barr Street (now Maha Bandoola Garden Street). The owner was an old Yorkshireman, Mr J. Whitfield Hirst, who had settled in Rangoon in the 1880s. He was well known for never bargaining and never compromising. When the Prince of Wales (in Burma on an official visit in 1906) sent word on a Sunday that he wanted to come by, Mr Whitfield Hirst refused, sending this message back: "My compliments to the Prince of Wales, but tell him I would not sell goods on Sunday even to the King of England."
