There was then still a clear view of the Shwedagon on Singuttara Hill. If over the 1990s and 2000s these wonderful old buildings downtown are combined with the best low-rise modern architecture, all within a proper urban plan, setting high-rise development off to the side, Rangoon would be one of the most beautiful cities in Asia today. Instead, cheap and slapdash construction downtown have turned a world-class city into what we have now, eroding billions of dollars in current and future value.
