The Saopha of Wuntho led a fierce resistance to British occupation but was finally defeated in 1891 by a British brigade of 1,800 men under General Sir George Wolseley. The seven-hundred-year-old Wuntho principality was incorporated into the Katha district of the new Sagaing Division. This photograph was taken by the British just after Wuntho had been captured and the Sawbwa had fled north to Yunnan (where he would live for 22 years).
